Avoid These Things To Avoid Distracted Driving

One of the biggest threats on our roads is distracted driving. Blamed for more than 3,000 deaths last year alone, distracted driving is made worse by the fact that we are all guilty of it. Ideally, when we drive, our attention should be on the road 100% of the time, but especially in today’s world, that just doesn’t seem to be possible. Cergizan’s Auto & Truck Repair in Chesterton, IN, wants everyone safe and happy on the roads, so we are sharing some of the common causes of distracted driving so you can avoid them.

Eating & Drinking

It can be so easy to become distracted by food and drink in the car. Even eating a quick burger while driving is a distraction, but it becomes amplified if something goes wrong. If you’ve ever spilled coffee on yourself when driving, you know what we are talking about. It is best to just be on the safe side and avoid eating and drinking in the car altogether. This goes for smoking or vaping, too, but fewer and fewer people seem to be doing that these days.

Your Cell Phone

This is probably the number one cause of distracted driving. People are on their phones 24/7 these days, and getting behind the wheel doesn’t seem to spur people to put them down. It has gotten so bad that some states have even enacted legislation making texting while driving a crime. There is simply no phone call or text message that is worth risking an accident or even death. Put your phone in your pocket or in the passenger seat while you drive.

Your Car Itself

Modern vehicles come with so many bells and whistles that it’s impossible not to become distracted. From the standard distractions like the radio or streaming music to the more modern stuff like touch screens, GPS, and cameras, your car seems almost designed to distract you. It’s best to set your GPS before you leave, decide on your music or radio in your driveway, and pledge to not fiddle with the other distractions on your dashboard.

At Cergizan’s Auto & Truck Repair in Chesterton, IN, we want everyone safe on the roads. That means putting down the phone, not eating french fries out of the bag before you get home, and not fiddling with the touch screen or radio while you are behind the wheel. Distracted driving kills, and we want everyone to arrive safely at their destinations. Avoid these distractions at all costs.
