Why Does My Car’s Air Conditioner Blow Hot Air?

The weather is warming up and it won’t be long until you need to use your car, truck, utility vehicle, or van’s air conditioner to keep cool and comfortable. If your air conditioner is blowing hot air instead of cold air, Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair recommends you bring it in to our shop so we can inspect the air conditioner to find out what is wrong. There are three common things that will cause the air conditioner to blow hot air. Here is what they are.

1. Leaking Refrigerant

Your vehicle’s air conditioning system uses refrigerant to cool the air before it is blown through the vents into the interior cabin. Many times, if you haven’t had your air conditioning serviced in years, the refrigerant can start to leak out of the air conditioning hose connections. You may not see drops on your garage floor, as these leaks tend to be minor yet they still cause the air conditioner to blow hot air. It could also be that your refrigerant level is low because, over the years, the refrigerant has evaporated.

2. Dead Compressor

If your compressor has worn out and died, you will not get cold air from your vehicle’s air conditioner. The compressor is responsible for circulating the refrigerant through the system so that it draws hot air out of the vehicle’s cabin and replaces it with cold air. The compressor will wear down if it isn’t used frequently, which it wouldn’t be during the winter months. It’s possible that you have plenty of refrigerant that isn’t leaking but you’re getting hot air through the vents because of a dead compressor.

3. Electrical System Problems

Today’s automobiles have extensive electrical systems to power all of the accessories and components. The air conditioner is no exception. The air conditioner has an electrical system unto itself that includes fuses, pressure switches, relays, and wires. If there is anything wrong in this electrical maze, you may end up with hot air blowing through your vents because the air conditioner doesn’t actually turn on. Electrical system problems can also open you up to the dangers of an electrical fire in your engine.
