How Can I Tell Whether My Fuel Injectors Are Dirty?

The fuel injectors are the last step in getting your vehicle’s diesel fuel or gasoline into the combustion chamber. Fuel is pumped from the gas tank through to the fuel injectors by the fuel pump and then it is mixed with air in your automobile’s cylinders so the spark plugs can ignite it. If your fuel injectors get clogged, which can happen after about 30,000 miles of driving, you will notice engine performance problems. Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair can clean your fuel injectors when they get dirty. Here is a list of the symptoms of dirty fuel injectors.

Engine Misfires

You may feel your vehicle vibrate as your engine misfires. This is usually a sign that there is not enough gas in the cylinders to mix with the air. An engine that is fuel-starved, will sputter as it misfires. If your fuel injectors are dirty and becoming clogged, they will be unable to spray enough fuel into the cylinders.

Idling Rough

You may also notice your engine misfiring when you are sitting at a red light or stop sign idling. You will feel your vehicle idling roughly. Depending on how bad the engine is misfiring, the rough idling may be subtle or it may make your vehicle feel as if it is vibrating severely. Depending on the extent of the fuel starvation, your engine might stall.

RPM Needle Dancing

Alongside the rough idling, you might also notice that your RPM needle on the tachometer is dancing about. It may go up and down sporadically as the engine fights to prevent itself from stalling. Bursts of air that do not have enough fuel to mix with it can also increase and decrease your RPMs. This can also happen while you are driving your automobile.

Poor Fuel Economy

When dirty fuel injectors throw off the air and fuel mixture balance, your fuel economy suffers. Because your engine is trying hard not to stall and to produce the power that you request of it when you press down on the accelerator, it will burn more fuel even though there is less fuel in the combustion chamber. You’ll notice the difference in how often you have to fill up your gas tank.

Finally, if your fuel injectors are so dirty that they are clogged completely, you may not be able to get your car, truck, or utility vehicle started.
