Does Transmission Fluid Change Color?

Yes, transmission fluid changes color as it ages. This is just one way to tell that it needs to be changed. The best way is to look at your owner’s manual to see when your vehicle manufacturer recommends transmission fluid services. Usually, it is recommended that the fluid be flushed and refilled every 30,000 miles. Cergizan’s Auto & Truck Repair lists the different colors of transmission fluid below that signify the different stages of its life.

Bright Red

The new transmission fluid is bright red and translucent. This fluid does an excellent job of protecting the transmission and helping it shift gears. It keeps the transmission cool and lubricated and works as an excellent hydraulic fluid. This fluid does not need to be changed. It is in excellent working condition.

Light Brown

Light brown transmission fluid that is still translucent is also doing a great job of protecting the transmission. This fluid is still capable of helping the transmission shift gears and keeping it cool and lubricated. You don’t need to change the transmission fluid yet, but you will soon.

Orange

Orange transmission fluid is in the same shape as light brown transmission fluid is in. It’s just that in some cases the transmission fluid looks more orange than light brown. Again, this transmission fluid is still doing its job just fine, but it is aging and will need to be replaced in the near future.

Brown/Dark Brown

Brown to dark brown transmission fluid needs to be changed. This fluid is old and is not doing a good job of protecting the transmission. The fluid is no longer translucent and is most likely depositing dirt and grime throughout the transmission. Gear shifting is rougher with brown to dark brown transmission fluid.

Black

If your transmission fluid is black, it has oxidized. This opaque fluid is not protecting your transmission. Rather, it is damaging it. Black transmission fluid will make it nearly impossible for your transmission to shift gears. In fact, you may find that you can’t even get your car into gear. Black transmission fluid must be changed immediately.

Pink

Finally, when engine coolant mixes with transmission fluid you end up with a “strawberry milkshake.” This is not only a sign of severe transmission damage but continuing to drive your automobile with this mixture will damage your transmission beyond repair.
