There are five specific things you can do that will extend the life of your tires and keep your wheels healthy. Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair is going to list the five things below. Taking care of your wheels and tires is as important as taking care of the rest of your automobile. Check your owner’s manual to see when your vehicle manufacturer recommends tire and wheel services. We will list the general recommendations for these services below.
1. Air Check
You can check the air in your tires if you purchase a quality air pressure gauge. It’s generally recommended that you check the air pressure at least once a month. Every two weeks is better to make sure the tires have not lost any air. If they have, inflate them only to the recommended PSI. Overinflated tires can get damaged quickly and the tread will wear away unevenly.
2. Inspection
You can also inspect your tires when you checked the air pressure. Take a good look at the tire tread to see how it is wearing down. If it looks like it’s wearing down evenly, everything is okay. If you can see spots, scallops, or feathers of wear, bring your vehicle to our shop so we can determine why the tire tread is not wearing down evenly.
3. Rotation
One thing that will cause uneven tire tread wear is an overdue tire rotation. Generally, tire rotations should be performed every 6,000 miles. As we said in the introduction to this blog post, however, your vehicle manufacturer may list a different recommendation in the owner’s manual. Make sure to have the tires rotated when it is recommended to ensure that they don’t develop a problem with uneven tire tread wear.
4. Balance
Another thing that can cause problems for your tire tread is wheels that are out of balance. You will feel the wheels vibrate as you pick up speed in your automobile if they are not balanced across the axles evenly. Wheel balance is so important that it is recommended every time you have the tires rotated. You want to make sure that the wheels’ axle weight is always even.
5. Alignment
Finally, misaligned wheels can also chew up the tire tread. In most cases, you only need to have your wheels aligned if they are knocked out of alignment or every two years.
