The Ins and Outs of Brake Repairs

Knowing the signs of brake trouble can help you stay safe. When your brakes need repair, it’s essential to get them fixed as soon as possible-after all, a faulty set of brakes can lead to severe accidents. But how do you know when you need brake repairs? Let’s explore the ins and outs of brake maintenance so that you can keep your car running safely.

Types of Brake Repairs

There are two main types of brake repair: pad replacement and rotor resurfacing. Pad replacement is often used when your existing pads have worn down or cracked. This usually takes about 30 minutes and involves removing old pads, cleaning off rust, installing new pads, and testing the brakes for proper operation. Rotor resurfacing is done when the rotors become warped or unevenly worn due to hard braking or driving on rough terrain. Again, this repair typically takes about an hour; it involves grinding down the rotor with a lathe until it is smooth again and then replacing any parts that may have been damaged.

Signs You Need Brake Repair

The most common signs you may need brake repairs include squealing or grinding noises from the wheels, a soft pedal, or vibrations when braking. If you notice any of these symptoms, take your car to a reputable auto shop immediately; this will ensure your safety on the road and save you money by avoiding more extensive damage.

Proper Maintenance

Regular maintenance is vital to keeping your brakes in good working order. Inspecting your car’s brakes every six months (or at least once a year) should be part of your routine, oil changes and tire rotations. During these inspections, make sure to check for wear and tear on the brakes themselves (pads, rotors) and their related components (brake lines, hoses). If anything looks suspicious or out-of-the-ordinary during these inspections-such as rotor cracks or loud noises from under the hood-it’s best to bring your car into an auto shop for a further inspection right away.
