An example of when you should have your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s exhaust system serviced is if the tailpipe is hanging too low. You should also have the system serviced if the tailpipe is dented or has a hole in it. It is recommended that you have the exhaust system inspected annually to make sure there is nothing wrong. Aside from damage to the tailpipe, here are other exhaust system problems.
Roaring Noises
If you have a hole in the muffler or a stolen catalytic converter, your automobile is going to roar loudly while it is running. The roaring will get even louder when you step on the gas. Unfortunately, this is the noise that the exhaust system makes that is usually muffled by the muffler and the catalytic converter. It’s important to have either problem resolved as soon as possible.
Sputtering/Lagging
If your engine is sputtering and/or lagging, it may be filled with exhaust. This is a sign that there is a part in the exhaust system that is leaking or that the exhaust system is clogged. Unfortunately, the exhaust needs to be removed from the engine in order for the engine to produce combustion efficiently. If the engine is filled with exhaust, this will inhibit the combustion production.
Poor Fuel Mileage
The poor-performing engine is also going to affect your fuel mileage. You will not get your normal fuel economy out of your automobile. Consequently, you will have to fill the tank more often until you have the exhaust system repaired. Once the exhaust system is repaired, this will restore your engine’s efficient operation. An efficient engine gets better fuel economy.
Exhaust Manifold Leaks
You will also have a sputtering engine if the exhaust manifold is leaking. When the exhaust manifold leaks, exhaust fills the engine and the combustion chamber. The same can be true if the manifold gasket is cracked. Aside from the poor performance, you may also hear tapping noises coming from the engine. This is the exhaust leaking out of the manifold.
Noticeable Exhaust Odors
Finally, noticeable exhaust odors in the passenger cabin are a sign that your exhaust system needs to be repaired. If the odors are particularly strong, have your vehicle towed to our shop so you can avoid inhaling dangerous exhaust.
