The Exhaust Manifold Can Crack and Cause Engine Problems

Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair is the best auto shop in Chesterton, and we’d be happy to inspect the exhaust manifold if you are having any of the following problems. The exhaust manifold takes the engine’s exhaust and pushes it into the catalytic converter so it can be treated. The manifold puts up with a ton of heat and pressure that can crack it eventually. Here are signs the manifold is cracked.

Reduced Performance

As the exhaust leaks out of the crack in the manifold, it fills the engine with gases. Unfortunately, these gases make it difficult for combustion to be produced in the combustion chamber. As such, there will be a reduction in your engine’s performance and acceleration.

Reduced Fuel Economy

As if that weren’t bad enough, the performance problems will also cause a reduction in the fuel economy that your vehicle gets out of a full tank. No pun intended, but your gas mileage will tank. This makes things difficult financially when gas is so expensive.

Strong Burning Smells

The leaking exhaust manifold can actually cause serious damage to the engine because it will overheat it. The exhaust is extremely hot, and it overheats the metal parts in the engine. When it comes into contact with rubber or plastic parts, it melts them.

Strong Exhaust Smells

Consequently, you will smell strong burning odors coming from the engine and you might smell exhaust inside your automobile. If the latter is the case, make sure to pull your vehicle over and call for a tow truck. Do not drive your automobile if you can smell the exhaust.

Start-Up Engine Noises

If you have a hunch that the manifold is cracked, perk your ears up when you first start your automobile. The engine can make strange sounds right after it has started because the exhaust will leak out of the manifold. These sounds are tapping and hissing.

CEL Dashboard Warning

Finally, the engine control module is going to receive system errors because of the problems discussed above. As such, it will turn on the check engine light and leave it on. Once we replace the leaking manifold and everything is restored, the CEL will turn off.
