Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair Can Find Out Why Your Engine Is Knocking

Head straight to Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair if your engine is knocking all the time. This could be a bad sign. Automobile engines can knock if there is a problem with the detonation in the cylinder block. They can also knock if there is a rod problem in the cylinder block. The latter can damage the cylinder block beyond repair. Let’s talk more about engine knocking below.

Knock Sensor Problems

One of the things that will make your engine knock continuously is a malfunctioning knock sensor. Usually, when the engine knocks, the sensor alerts the engine control module so it can make adjustments in the combustion chamber to correct the detonation. If the sensor is bad, the module will be unaware that the engine is knocking.

Faulty Spark Plugs

Another thing that can make your engine knock is faulty spark plugs. If the plugs need to be replaced, they may misfire and cause multiple firings in each cylinder. This is what makes the knocking noise; the multiple firings. Replacing the spark plugs can resolve the issue. This being said, the engine control module could also be firing the plugs at the wrong time.

Fuel Mixture Problems

You probably already know that a lean fuel mixture is one that is heavy and air. Consequently, there is not enough fuel in this mixture for the air in fuel to only fire wants. Rather, the mixture will not get hot enough and it will fire multiple times.

Gasoline Problems

This will also happen if you put gasoline in your automobile that has a lower octane rating than what your engine needs. For example, your high-performance BMW likely calls for 91 octane. Putting anything lower than that in the tank is going to make the engine knock.

Rod Bearing Problems

As we mentioned above, rod knock can damage the cylinder block. The pistons are attached to rods that have bearings that move them up and down inside the cylinders. If the bearings are worn out, the rods will jiggle and crash the pistons against the cylinder walls.

Accessory Belt Noise

Finally, your engine may actually not be knocking. Rather, you may have a loose accessory belt that is flapping around inside the engine. We can tighten the belt to stop the noise.
