We here at Cergizan’s Auto and Truck Repair would never try to influence your decision. We will say, however, that if your car, truck, or C/SUV has special meaning to you and you cannot imagine driving anything else, it might be worth it to replace the engine when the time comes. For some, cars are a lifetime investment, so no other choice is available to them in their minds. We can help you determine if your vehicle needs a new engine. Here are signs that it does.
Constant Knocking Noises
If your car, truck, or utility vehicle’s engine is knocking constantly, it’s possible that the rod bearings are worn and the pistons are damaging the cylinders. The uneven motion caused by the rod bearings can also break the rods. When this happens, the engine is rendered inoperable and needs to be replaced.
Constant Overheating
If your automobile is overheating constantly even though the cooling system has been replaced, you may have a cracked cylinder block or other severe damage such as a cracked exhaust manifold. A partial rebuild of the engine will be required at a minimum to stop the engine from overheating all the time.
Excessive Engine Exhaust
Excessive engine exhaust flowing out of the exhaust pipe is a sign that the engine is hemorrhaging fluid. In the case of black exhaust, you have a fuel hemorrhage somewhere in the engine. If the exhaust is blue or gray, the engine is hemorrhaging motor oil, and the more you drive your automobile the more you will damage it. Finally, White exhaust means that the engine is hemorrhaging cooling system coolant.
Metal Shavings in the Oil
You never want to see metal in the motor oil. This is a sign that the engine is at the end of its life. The shavings end up in the oil because the engine parts are dissolving into the oil as it flows over them. Naturally, we cannot repair this problem. It will be necessary to drop a new engine into your automobile.
Significant Power Loss
Finally, significant power loss suggests that the engine is tired and doesn’t want to run anymore. Anything that is mechanical will die eventually. The same is true for your automobile’s engine. There will come a time when it can no longer produce power no matter what we do in our efforts to repair it.
